About Oldonyo Sabuk National Park
Oldonyo Sabuk — ‘Big Mountain’ in Maasai — is a solitary mountain rising 2,145 m about 65 km northeast of Nairobi. This small but rewarding national park protects a pristine montane forest cloaking the mountain’s slopes.
Hike through dense forest — home to buffaloes, bushbucks, olive baboons, colobus monkeys and over 270 bird species — to a summit with sweeping views of Mount Kenya, the Athi Plains and even Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.
The mountain also has a fascinating colonial history: the grave of Sir Northrup McMillan, an American settler, sits on its slopes. Nearby, the spectacular Fourteen Falls on the Athi River makes a perfect second stop on this adventurous day trip.
