From early human fossils to ‘Out of Africa’ romance — explore the museums and galleries that tell Kenya’s extraordinary story.
Kenya's Heritage Headquarters
The Nairobi National Museum is Kenya's flagship museum, showcasing the country's rich natural history, culture and art. Highlights include the cradle of humankind gallery with early hominid fossils, the Hall of Kenya's birds with over 900 specimens, ethnographic displays from Kenya's 40+ communities, and a contemporary art gallery. The adjacent Snake Park adds live reptiles to your visit.
Africa's Premier Art & Heritage Collection
Founded from the personal collection of Kenya's second Vice-President Joseph Murumbi — Africa's greatest private collector — this gallery houses stunning African art, traditional artifacts, jewelry, weaponry, stamps and rare books. It's a treasure trove of Pan-African heritage collected over a lifetime of passion for the continent's culture.
Birthplace of the 'Lunatic Express'
Nairobi owes its very existence to the railway. The Railway Museum tells the story of the Kenya-Uganda Railway — the 'Lunatic Express' — built from 1896, around which the city grew. Explore vintage steam locomotives, royal carriages, and the famous carriage from which a man-eating lion of Tsavo dragged a passenger in 1898. A must for history and train enthusiasts.
The 'Out of Africa' House
Set at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the Karen Blixen Museum is the farmhouse where the Danish author of 'Out of Africa' lived from 1917 to 1931. Walk through rooms preserved with original furniture and photographs, tour the coffee farm machinery, and hear the love story of Karen Blixen and Denys Finch Hatton. The Oscar-winning film was partly shot right here.
Half-day and full-day guided museum tours with entry fees, transport, and expert local storytelling included.
