Karura Forest is a 1,000-hectare indigenous urban forest in the heart of Nairobi — one of the largest urban forests in the world. It was famously saved from development by Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai and the Green Belt Movement, making it a living symbol of Kenya’s conservation struggle.
Today the forest offers over 50 km of well-marked trails for walking, jogging and cycling, winding past a stunning waterfall, bamboo groves, butterfly-rich clearings and historic Mau Mau caves. Bike hire is available at the main gates.
Keep an eye out for Sykes monkeys, bush duikers, porcupines and over 200 bird species. With secure, family-friendly paths, Karura is the perfect half-day escape into nature without leaving the city.
