Standing proudly on Moi Avenue, the Kenya National Archives is one of Nairobi’s most recognizable landmarks — and the guardian of the nation’s memory. It safeguards over 40,000 historical documents, photographs and records spanning Kenya’s colonial and post-independence history.
The ground-floor gallery is a compact but fascinating museum: traditional artifacts, weapons and musical instruments from Kenya’s communities, portraits of Kenya’s presidents, and historic photographs of old Nairobi and the independence era.
Originally built as a bank in 1906, the building itself is a piece of history. It’s a quick but rewarding stop that fits perfectly into any city centre walking tour.
