Nairobi City Tours & Excursions

Discover Nairobi beyond the ordinary

Welcome to Nairobi — the Green City in the Sun.

A city where skyscrapers rise above a landscape of trees.Where a busy modern capital sits beside one of Africa’s most remarkable wildlife sanctuaries.
Where the stories of Kenya’s struggle for independence are written into monuments, streets and historic buildings.Where museums preserve millions of years of human history. And where, just beyond the city’s concrete landscape, forests, waterfalls, hills and open countryside await.

This is Nairobi. Many visitors arrive here simply because it is the gateway to their Kenyan safari. But Nairobi deserves more than a stopover. Give the city a little time and you will discover a destination with its own character, its own stories and its own extraordinary experiences.

At African Affarble Expedition, we invite you to discover Nairobi through the eyes of people who know and love the city.

Nairobi — A City Built on History

Nairobi’s story began in the late nineteenth century with the arrival of the Uganda Railway. What started as a railway settlement grew rapidly into a commercial and administrative centre and eventually became the capital of Kenya.

But the story of Nairobi is much bigger than the railway. It is a story of different communities coming together; of traders, workers, settlers, politicians, freedom fighters, artists and entrepreneurs. It is a story of colonialism and resistance, independence and nation-building, and the transformation of a small railway town into one of Africa’s major cities.

Today, traces of all those chapters remain. They can be found in the old buildings of the city centre, in historic mosques and libraries, in railway heritage, in national monuments, in museums and galleries, and in the statues of people who helped shape Kenya.

To walk through Nairobi is, in many ways, to walk through Kenya’s history.

Nairobi Today

Modern Nairobi is the capital and largest urban centre of Kenya. Nairobi City County covers approximately 681 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 5.2 million people, based on the 2023 estimate cited by Nairobi City County. During the day, the city’s population rises to around 7 million as workers, students, traders and visitors converge on the capital.

Its influence extends well beyond Kenya.Nairobi is a major commercial and diplomatic centre for East and Central Africa and hosts more than 100 foreign missions, consulates and embassies. It is also home to the global headquarters of UN-Habitat.

Yet perhaps the most fascinating thing about Nairobi is the contrast. You can be surrounded by modern city life in the morning and watching wild animals on open savannah before the day is over.

Kenya Tourism Board promotes Nairobi precisely for this remarkable combination of urban experiences and wildlife.

Wildlife & Conservation

Where else can you go on safari with a city skyline in the distance?

Nairobi is famous for one extraordinary distinction: a national park on the doorstep of a major capital city.

Nairobi National Park

Just a short distance from the city centre, Nairobi National Park offers the opportunity to see wildlife against the backdrop of Nairobi's skyline. Lions, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, rhinos and many other species inhabit its grasslands and wetlands. The Kenya Tourism Board describes the park as a unique urban safari experience, with the park only about 10 km from the city centre.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Meet rescued elephant orphans and learn about the conservation work dedicated to giving them a second chance.

Giraffe Centre

Come face-to-face with the elegant Rothschild's giraffe and learn about one of Kenya's most important giraffe conservation programmes.

Nairobi Safari Walk

A fascinating introduction to Kenya's wildlife and conservation heritage.

Nairobi Snake Park

Discover Kenya's fascinating reptiles and learn more about creatures that are often misunderstood.

Nairobi Animal Orphanage

Another opportunity to learn about wildlife rescue and conservation.

In Nairobi, the safari doesn't begin after you leave the city.

The safari can begin in the city itself.

Outdoors, Nature & Adventure

Nairobi is a city of surprising green spaces.

When the traffic and noise become too much, you don't necessarily need to travel hundreds of kilometres to escape. Sometimes, nature is just around the corner.

Karura Forest

Explore forest trails, waterfalls, caves and indigenous vegetation within one of Nairobi's most remarkable urban forests.

Oloolua Forest

Walk through a peaceful forest environment in Karen, discover the caves and enjoy the sound of the seasonal waterfall.

Ngong Forest

Experience another of Nairobi's green escapes and enjoy walking, birdwatching and open spaces away from the city's busiest areas.

Nairobi Arboretum

A peaceful urban sanctuary for walking, relaxing, birdwatching and enjoying Nairobi's plant life.

Paradise Lost

A popular recreational escape combining caves, water and outdoor activities.

Fourteen Falls

Leave the city behind and follow the Athi River to one of the region's spectacular waterfall landscapes.

Ol Donyo Sabuk

For those seeking a more adventurous excursion, hike into the hills of Ol Donyo Sabuk and enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding countryside.

Hell's Gate National Park

Dramatic cliffs, gorges, geothermal landscapes, hiking and cycling make Hell's Gate an exciting full-day excursion from Nairobi.

Sometimes the best way to discover Nairobi is to leave the concrete behind.

Culture & Traditional Kenya

Kenya is not only about wildlife. It is a country of many peoples, languages, traditions, music, dances, cuisines and ways of life — and Nairobi is where many of these cultures meet.

Bomas of Kenya

Discover traditional homesteads, music, dance and cultural traditions from different communities across Kenya. The Kenya Tourism Board describes Bomas as an immersive cultural experience where visitors can explore traditional homesteads and enjoy music and dance performances.

But cultural Nairobi goes beyond Bomas. Depending on your interests, we can introduce you to:

  • Kenyan traditional food
  • Local markets
  • Contemporary Kenyan art
  • African crafts
  • Music and dance
  • Local communities
  • Nairobi's multicultural neighbourhoods

Our Approach

Why Explore Nairobi with African Affarble Expedition?

We are not interested in simply ticking attractions off a list, we want you to understand the place you are visiting. Our locally owned and locally guided approach gives you the opportunity to experience Nairobi through the knowledge of people who understand its history, culture, wildlife and surrounding landscapes.

We can also combine Nairobi experiences with your wider Kenya safari. That means your Nairobi excursion doesn't have to be a separate activity, it can become the first chapter of your Kenyan adventure.

Nairobi Is Waiting.

Nairobi is far more than a transit point on your way to the Masai Mara or Amboseli. It is a destination in its own right — a city where you can stand beneath historic monuments, explore world-class museums, watch lions and rhinos roam against a modern skyline, lose yourself in ancient forests and waterfalls, and experience the diverse cultures that make Kenya unique.
Before you leave the city, take a moment to discover Nairobi beyond the safari gateway — and understand why it deserves a place on your Kenya itinerary.
Nairobi is a destination in its own right.
