Nairobi National Park alone hosts over 500 bird species, including raptors, weavers and seasonal migrants, while Lake Nakuru, Baringo and Bogoria are famous for pelicans, raptors, localized dry-country species and spectacular flamingo flocks in season.

Day 1: Birdwatching in Nairobi National Park – Over 500 Bird Species at Kenya’s Urban Wildlife Sanctuary

The 7-Day Great Rift Valley Birding Safari helps you to explore world-class birding in Nairobi National Park with over 500 recorded bird species, including raptors, waterbirds and migratory birds, just minutes from Nairobi city.

Early morning pick up from your Nairobi hotel/airport.
Full-day birding in Nairobi National Park: grassland, riverine forest and dams.
Target species may include Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, various vultures and eagles, weavers, cisticolas, larks and, in season, Palearctic migrants.

Picnic lunch in the park, with relaxed birding around dams and picnic sites.
Late afternoon checklist session and transfer back to your Nairobi hotel.
Accommodation: Nairobi city hotel or tented camp (BB or HB, as per your package).

Day 2: Lake Naivasha Birding Safari – Freshwater Birds, Boat Trips & Papyrus Wetlands

Discover Lake Naivasha birdlife on a guided boat safari featuring fish eagles, kingfishers, pelicans and wetland species in one of Kenya’s top birding destinations.

After breakfast drive down the Great Rift Valley escarpment to Lake Naivasha.
En-route stop at a viewpoint for landscape photography and raptor spotting.
Check in to a lakeside lodge/camp.

Afternoon boat ride on Lake Naivasha: look for African Fish Eagle, herons, egrets, pelicans, kingfishers and numerous duck species along the papyrus fringes.
Optional guided walk on Crescent Island or along the lakeshore for terrestrial species.
Accommodation: Lake Naivasha Budget lodge/camp on full board.

Day 3:Lake Elementeita Birding – Flamingos & Rift Valley Shorebirds Sanctuary

Enjoy birdwatching at Lake Elementeita with flamingos, stilts, avocets and migratory shorebirds in a peaceful Rift Valley birding haven near Nakuru.
for weavers, sunbirds and woodland species.

After breakfast, depart for Lake Elementeita, a smaller soda lake and important bird area.
Afternoon birding along the shoreline and acacia woodland: chances for flamingos (water levels permitting), avocets, stilts, plovers, sandpipers and steppe migrants in season.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park Birding – Flamingos, Pelicans & Raptors in Kenya’s Birding Capital

Birding at Lake Nakuru National Park offers flamingos, pelicans, storks and birds of prey within one of Kenya’s premier wildlife and birdwatching parks.

Early morning birding at Elementeita before driving to Lake Nakuru National Park.
Full or half-day game drive and birding in Lake Nakuru: look out for Great White Pelican, African Fish Eagle, various ducks, storks, vultures and eagles, plus both Greater and Lesser Flamingos when conditions are right.
The park also offers good mammal viewing, including buffalo, giraffe, zebra and rhino.
Evening checklist and species review with your guide.
Accommodation :budget Lodge/camp in or near Lake Nakuru NP on full board.

Day 5: Lake Baringo Birding Safari – Endemic Birds & Acacia Woodland Species

Experience exceptional birdwatching at Lake Baringo, home to Kenya’s endemic and dry-country species, including hornbills, bee-eaters and rare weavers.

After breakfast, drive north through the Rift Valley to Lake Baringo, one of Kenya’s finest birding destinations with around 470–480 species recorded.
Check in at a lakeside camp/lodge.
Afternoon birding around the grounds and shoreline: target Goliath Heron, African Fish Eagle, kingfishers, bee-eaters, weavers and dry-country species.
Evening optional night walk for owls and nightjars, weather permitting.
Accommodation: Lake Baringo budget camp/lodge on full board.

Day 6: Lake Bogoria Birding Tour – Flamingos, Hot Springs & Rift Valley Landscapes

Explore Lake Bogoria’s spectacular flamingos and soda lake birdlife with dramatic geysers and open savannah scenery in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley.

Early morning guided bird walk at Baringo focusing on localized specialties such as Hemprich’s Hornbill, Northern Masked Weaver, Bristle-crowned Starling and Verreaux’s Eagle along nearby cliffs and rocky slopes.
After breakfast, drive to nearby Lake Bogoria, famed for its hot springs and huge flocks of flamingos in season.
Birding along the lake shore: Lesser and Greater Flamingos, stilts, sandpipers, avocets, plovers and raptors taking advantage of the concentrations of birds.
Enjoy landscape and bird photography around the hot springs area (at a safe distance).
Afternoon drive back to your lodge (Baringo/Bogoria area), evening at leisure.
Accommodation: Lake Bogoria or Lake Baringo budget lodge/camp on full board.

Day 7: Return to Nairobi – Departure

Optional short early morning bird walk to pick up any remaining species.
After breakfast, depart the Rift Valley lakes and drive back to Nairobi, with birding and comfort stops along the way.
Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – end of safari.

This 7 days Great Rift Valley Birding Safari is designed as a budget to lower mid-range tour, using clean, comfortable camps and lodges such as Wildebeest Eco Camp (Nairobi), Camp Carnelley’s or Fish Eagle Inn (Naivasha), a cosy lodge at Lake Elementeita, Flamingo Hill Tented Camp (Nakuru), Robert’s Camp or Soi Safari Lodge (Baringo) and a simple lodge near Lake Bogoria. Exact properties may change according to travel dates and availability, but we always prioritise great birding locations and local hospitality.
